UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment His Excellency Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, visited Sharjah Seed Bank and Herbarium in Al Dhaid, on September 3, 2020. The delegation led by the minister was briefed on the activities about seed banking, herbarium, and DNA barcoding of native plants to conserve the botanical heritage of UAE. The delegation was then given a brief tour of the seed laboratories, herbarium, and plant biotechnology laboratory, where the visitors were able to gain insight into various research activities. The discussions were held on different ways to structure plant research that can have implications for climate change adaptation in arid desert environments. Employing new technologies in plant and seed-based research is of great importance, in particular, to help better understand the impact of changing climates on UAE’s native plant genetic resources and develop crops that can sustain the changes and resistance to high salinity, drought, and higher temperature.
